out = hết, tắt, biến mất

out có thể mang nghĩa không còn nữa: run out (of) (hết), sell out (bán hết), go out (đèn/lửa tắt), put out (dập lửa), blow out (thổi tắt), die out (tuyệt chủng, mai một).

  • We've run out of rice. Can you buy some?

    Nhà mình hết gạo rồi. Bạn mua ít được không?

  • Firefighters put out the fire in twenty minutes.

Lưu ý

'run out of' có tân ngữ: 'We've run out of milk'. Không có tân ngữ: 'The milk has run out'.

find out (tìm ra thông tin), work out (tính ra, giải ra; hoặc tập thể dục), sort out (giải quyết, sắp xếp), turn out (hóa ra).

find out / work out / sort out + something; turn out (to be / that…)

  • I can't work out how to use this new app.

    Tôi không hiểu ra cách dùng ứng dụng mới này.

  • Don't worry, we'll sort out the problem tomorrow.

    Đừng lo, ngày mai chúng ta sẽ giải quyết vấn đề.

  • The stranger turned out to be my father's old classmate.

carry out, try out, leave out, drop out

carry out (tiến hành, thực hiện), try out (dùng thử), leave out (bỏ sót, không đưa vào), drop out (of) (bỏ học, bỏ ngang).

carry out + research/plan; try out + thứ mới; leave out + ai/cái gì; drop out of + khóa học/trường

  • The company carried out a survey of its customers.

    Công ty đã tiến hành khảo sát khách hàng.

  • You left out my name on the list.

    Bạn bỏ sót tên tôi trong danh sách.

  • He dropped out of university to start a business.

    Anh ấy bỏ đại học để khởi nghiệp.
